I have read most of that Moonlight work but did not make that connection to pre Civil War Kansas. He also seems to have a somewhat romantic perception of war? It would be interesting to discover the source of that nature.

I think you mentioned in an earlier post that Missouri soldiers respected Moonlight's artillery ability. Why would that be?

Are the exploits of Moonlight and the other Kansas military officers taught at Kansas and Missouri schools? In Scotland we study the exploits of Bonnie Prince Charlie, William Wallace and implications for Scottish nationalism. Considering the size of Scotland, its history would be similar to the history of a large American state fighting for identity. That learning, however limited is often translated into our participation in sport. A military company or unit may have a similar identity in microcosm.

Our identity with and attachment to our country or a state is often a complex concept to understand. In the civil war many conflicting cultures met with many nationalities. By our nature, sport might have been a pleasant release from war.
