Colonel Thomas Moonlight was first an enlisted man in the U.S. Army (sergeant of artillery) during the Seminole Wars and he was one of the few men with a military background that rose in the ranks during the Civil War in Kansas. Kansas was replete with politicians and men with little formal military experience that Moonlight was a rarity among the soldiers of Kansas.

Moonlight's reminiscences are at the Yale Library, the Beineke Manuscript Collection.
