Re: Carbines of the 12th Missouri Cavalry

John,

I spent most of Friday viewing microfilm of post returns and the compiled military service records of several members of Wachsman's Battery.

Due to my prior misinterpretation of information in some of the battery members ' confusing military records, I can report that the battery never had a gun, or any members of the unit captured by the enemy! Thus I want to rescind the rubbish I posted on 3/12/2015 at 5:44 p.m. regarding the possible loss of one of the 2.9" English rifles.

(I became originally confused when I saw there were nine members of the battery at Benton Barracks in November and December 1862 and their records listed them as paroled prisoners. This designation was actually due to the fact they were waiting to be formally exchanged after having been originally paroled at the Battle of Lexington in September 1861 prior to their enlistments in Wachsman's Battery!)

I concur with your determination that the gun composition of Wachsman's Battery was four 2.9" English Rifles and two mountain howitzers during its entire existance.

I think I am going to have my researcher at the National Archives see if there is an ordnance report for the battery after it was reorganized in May 1863 and redesignated Thurber's Battery, Missouri State Militia Light Artillery. (It appears the unit may have obtained two 6-pdr. field guns to replace the two mountain howitzers - don't think they would have swapped them for two of the 2.9" English Rifles.) Unfortunately, I probably won't have the search at the National Archives done until after I move which is rapidly approaching.

Please note, I have posted a second message with trascription you requested regarding the removal of two of the English Rifles from Company L, 2nd Missouri Light Artillery in February 1865.

Gil
