Re: Carbines of the 12th Missouri Cavalry

If memory serves me correctly the exact gun composition of Co. L, 2nd Missouri Light Artillery was contained in a battery organization/early 1864 post return which identified them.

One of the Missouri State Historians had mentioned to me many years ago that he had seen a document from the U. S. Ordnance Department in St. Louis in 1864 about how hard it was to produce/obtain shells for some small rifled guns in the department. Unfortunately, it didn't mention the 2.9" English rifles or any battery specifically. I guess it would have been possible for the 2.9" English rifles to have been ordered turned over to the Ordnance Department in late 1864, but I have never uncovered any evidence. The guns would have been turned over in late March/early April 1865 at the time the battery was equipped as cavalry prior to its departure on the the Powder River Expedition.

The disappearance of one of the 2.9" English rifles in late 1862 is shrouded in mystery. It occurred in late October or November 1862. Ten men of the battery were taken prisoner at the approximate same time the gun disappears from records. (Coincidentally, 10 is the the same number on a gun crew.) I have wasted many hours trying to determine where this event occurred and the circumstances involved. A sketchy source hints the men were taken captive in Southern Missouri. I am hoping the details may be revealed in a pension application for one of the ten men if they had any. I haven't obtained any records yet - still considering how much money I really want to spend pursuing the issue.

Good luck on your research!
