I forgot to mention, Cole included in his report that his column was equipped with two 3" ordnance rifles (see O. R. Series I, Vol. 48, Part I). Several of the batteries in the 2nd Missouri Light Artillery were equipped with this type artillery piece, but not all. Thus not all of the batteries were experienced with this type gun which would eliminate some of the units from having manned the guns in Cole's column.
NOTE: Company L turned in its two 2.9" English rifles when they reported to St. Louis prior to being outfitted for the expedition. (Evidence supports this type gun was a small 10-pdr. Blakely rifle.) The battery had also been equipped with four 3" ordnance rifles and it is assumed they were turned in to the Ordnance Department.
