I have not seen the ordnance reports for the 2nd Missouri Light Artillery at the time they were reequipped as cavalry in May 1865 at Saint Louis prior to the regiment's departure on the Powder River Expedition. John D. McAulay, author of CARBINES OF THE U. S. CAVALRY, 1861-1905, did extensive research in the ordnance reports at the National Archives for that study. On page 59 of that book, he states "In May 1865, half of the rimfire Gallager carbines delivered to the Ordnance Department were shipped to the St. Louis Arsenal. They were issued to the troops sent there to operate against the Indians." Thus I think it would be safe to say the majority of the men in the 2nd Missouri Light Artillery were probably equipped with Gallager carbines. Several accounts/reminiscences of the men on the expedition state there were many soldiers that were only provided Colt revolvers!
