If you have never read SOLDIERING IN SIOUX COUNTRY: 1865, you might want to obtain a copy. This is the published diary of Charles H. Springer, a lieutenant in Company B, 12th Missouri Cavalry, who took part in the expedition. Benjamin Franklin Cooling did a nice job of editing the book. The book was originally published in 1971 by Frontier Heritage Press. (I think it might also have been reprinted around 1973 by Nash Publishing?) The book has been out of print for a long time, but you can still locate copies for sale though various booksellers on the internet.
David E. Wagner quotes from Springer's diary alot in his work POWDER RIVER ODYSSEY: NELSON COLE'S WESTERN CAMPAIGN OF 1865.
