Indian war history buffs and persons who do research on the 16th Kansas Cavalry will appreciate a recent release by the Arthur H. Clark Company (distributed by the University of Oklahoma Press): POWDER RIVER ODYSSEY: NELSON COLE'S WESTERN CAMPAIGN OF 1865. The book was written by the late, David E. Wagner. The book is about two of the three columns which comprised the ill-fated Powder River Expedition of 1865 under the overall command of Brig. Gen. Patrick E. Connor. There is much on the center column commanded by Lt. Col. Samuel Walker and the 16th Kansas Cavalry. The study features a day-by-day account of Cole's and Walker's columns and features many previously unpublished primary sources, including the journal of Lyman G. Bennett, who accompanied Cole's eastern column. There is also an abundance of maps which allows you to track the columns and to be able to locate the sites where various events took place so you can visit. Cole's and Walker's columns were involved in "Roman Nose's Fight" on Septemebr 8, 1865. This was the largest encounter between whites and Native Americans in the history of the Indian wars on the northern plains.
