The Kansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Civil war Veteran tombstone photos

For your readers who do not realize it. The Kansas Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans has been attempting to locate and document the graves of all Confederate soldiers buried in Kansas. If anybody is interested please feel free to contact me.

BTW, during this search members of the SCV's Lewis A. Amristead Camp #1847, located the grave of Pvt. John Callahan in Manhattan's Sunset Cemetery. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for capturing the 2nd Alabama Infantry regiment's battle flag during the attack on Fort Blakely in April 1865. After a two-year fight that eventually got two senators and two congressmen involved, the VA "allowed" me to become Callahan's honorary next-of-kin and we were able to secure a tombstone for the veteran who had lain in an unmarked grave for over 87-years. The Sons of Union Veterans emplaced the tombstone and we had a dedication ceremony on Memorial Day in 2002.
