Company G, 3rd IHG Day Book

I have completed the transcription and placed in a computer file the Day book of Company G, 3rd IHG as kept in the last two years of the war by Maxwell Phillips, Brother to William A. Phillips who commanded the Union Indian Brigade and the 3rd Indian Home Guards. There are letters in the day book that are of considerable interest to researchers involving complaints to Blunt about cattle being stolen from the families of his men and sold at Fort Scott. The record will show Maxwell as being a conscientious man.

Included in the file is the muster out records of the 3rd IHG listing all of the men who had served in the company and what had happened to them. This huge document was difficult at times to transcribe but it is complete with all names and their ages, which seems to average around thirty and unusual in itself.

The company was raised at Flat Rock, Cherokee Nation at the time when the Indian Expedition was floundering in July 1862. The company was then mustered in at Carthage on September 16, 1862 some two weeks before their first fight at Newtonia.

This set of documents is the first of which that I have come across that gives us a clear picture of how the men were armed, equipped and their individual situation. There were many desertions, deaths by disease, only two known killed in action with two missing in action. I suspect two others listed as deserters, who may have been bushwhacked near Neosho in December 1862.

Those interested I will be glad to send an attached file to an email address you send me. I have on an older system with Microsoft word text so you may have to have it converted to your use.
