Hi Tom,

Thanks for the note. Your marker is presumably that of 1st Lieutenant John Murphy, Company D, 40th IVI. I'll have to check the Indiana Adjutant General's Report for his service record and will get back to you. Given that Murphy was in Company D, I do believe he resided right here in Tippecanoe County IN, which is my stomping grounds. It so happens that Tippecanoe County furnished the bulk of enlistees to the 40th IVI: at least half of them came from this county alone when it organized in the fall of 1861. The 40th IVI, in fact, was initially raised at Camp Tippecanoe, the site of which is only three blocks from my house here in Lafayette, IN.

As time permits, I'll provide further details and will also send you some earth from the locale from whence Murphy came.
If you can provide any specifics regarding the name of the cemetery, plot number, etc. I'd be very grateful since I know some other folks interested in the 40th IVI and they'd like to have this information. I'm not familiar with the "history" you mentioned, since the 40th IVI never published a formal regimental history after the war. There has been talk of doing one eventually, since the 40th IVI had a particularly distinguished record (it's a "Fox's Fighting 300" regiment):
