Regiment lost during service 9 Officers and 147 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 254 Enlisted men by disease. Total 411.

Battle of Nashville Dec.15-16,1864.Official records state the IV corps was involved Dec.15 pursued Hood for ten days till Hood crossed the Tennesee River.
A.G.report:Apr.1864 transfered to 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 14th Army Corps, to June, 1865.
There seems to be a reorganizing of the 14th corps. in fall of 1864 because many of the original regiments term of enlistment was up.38th mustered September 18, 1861 for three years.Your kin would have been a new recruit mustering in Sept. of 64.Many went home some veteranized.Notice time lapps between Sept.1 and Oct. 3rd.
Oct. and Nov. of 1864 the 14th corps was involved with chasing Hood in N.GA. and ALA.He might of been wounded then or just sick. It is amazing how many casualties come from recruits not adjusting to camp life in the south or anywhere for that matter. In this case(38IND.) 1 Officer and 254 Enlisted men by disease.
I can't explain as I don't know this specific regiment other than what is in A.G. report of the unit. Certain companies might have been detached.
Nashville had several large hospitols. He could of been judged well enough to attempt to catch up with his regiment then in GA..Brideport is on the way from Nashville headed to Atlanta, and it was decided he couldn't contiue returning to Nashville.
Or released from hospitol and chased Hood ending up at Bridgeport(On TN.River)sick again.Who knows?
With all this I searched Soldiers and Sailors System ,NARA,and it does have a
Jacob Schneider,38IND.Inf.Co.B
John George Schneider,38IND.Inf.Co.B.
Any relation?
Joseph N.Schneider(alt. spelling Snyder)14IND.Inf.Co.E,this regiment was in the eastern Campaigns, mustered out June of 1864 balance transfered to 20IND.also in eastern campaigns.
There are seven men listed in the Joseph (Snyder) spelling from Indianna, none in the 38th...
Do any of these ring a bell!Good luck!
