The Indiana in the Civil War Message Board

For Indiana residents - re.: Camp Morton

Hi folks,

I don't know if or how many Indiana residents visit this group, but I thought I might mention something.

I recently authored a book called "Den of Misery: Indiana's Civil War Prison." It has been published by Pelican Publishing Co.

I thought I might mention that on April 29 I am signing copies of my book at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis. They are having a living history-type re-enactment event that day.

I would love to meet anyone who is close enough geographically to attend that event. I am scheduled to sign books between noon-2 p.m. that day.

About Col. Owens that someone mentioned - He was camp commandant during the early years of the prison - before things got very bad. It was a fairly humane prison camp during Col. Owens' watch, and many Confederate prisoners were grateful to him after the war.
