Re: Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic

My wife, Karen, has a great-great grandfather, Frank White, who was a Major with the 15th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He was also Lt. Col. with the 17th Indiana Volunteer (Mounted) Infantry Regiment. He fought in all of the major campaigns in the Western Theater (West Virginia, Shiloh, Perryville, Stones River, Tullohoma, Missionary Ridge, and Wilson's Raid in Georgia.

He accepted the surrender of Macon, Georgia at the end of the war, and helped to defeat General Nathan Bedford Forrest (the "Wizard of the Saddle"). He was field commander of one of the first units to reach the summit of Missionary Ridge (with the 15th Indiana).

He saved the day at Stones River with his regiment (the 15th Indiana) at the "Round Forest" and "Hell's Half Acre". He was associated with Wagner's Brigade (15th Indiana) and Wilder's Brigade (17th Indiana). He was latter brevited as a brigidier general at the end of the war. He died of ill health soon after the war, due to the extreme hardships of combat and the hostile environment.
