Private James M. Lewelling was drafted in the Permanent Party, Garrison Guard, Indiana on October 26, 1864. Asigned to Company A, 22nd Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Mustered out at Indianapolis, Indiana May 8, 1865. Not much is known about the Permanent Party, Garrison Guard. They were stationed at various posts in and around Indianapolis guarding prisoners and doing garrison duty. They also made up the honor guard for the body of President Lincoln at the Indiana State House. He is listed as "James Lewellen" in the Indiana State Digital Archives and "James Lewelling" in "Hazard's History of Indiana. "Forward with the Colors!"
