Re: Beverly James Dickerson killed in Indiana

The Indiana Division of the Indiana State Library sent this copy of the report of Beverly Dickerson's murder.

Indianapolis Sentinel, Indiana, 28 Jan 1863
A COLD BLOODED MURDER - On Monday night Mr B. J. Dickerson, the Marshal of Franklin was shot and killed by some vile assassin. Mr. Dickerson had been summoned to Louisville as a witness on an important trial, and was waiting in the office of the Jeffersonville railroad, in company with several persons, when he was shot through the window and expired almost instantly. So sudden was the occurance and so unexpected that the gentleman who heard the report supposed it was some explosion in the stove that caused the noise, and did not know a foul murder had been committed until a lady who sat near Mr. Dickerson pointed to him as he fell forward from his seat.

The gun, it was supposed, was loaded with nails, as two or three nails had penetrated the selling partition near where his head had rested, and two or more wounds were on his head. The murder has caused great excitement, as Mr. Dickerson was a good citizen, a clever gentleman and exceedingly popular. It was not known he had an enemy in the town. The only reason that can be conjectured is that it may have been some rowdy he had at sometime arrested, or someone connected with the suit in which he was a witness. But this is conjecture, as no clue has been discovered to lead to the detection of the assassin.
Since the above was in type we have received the following note on the subject:

Franklin, Jan 27, 1863
EDITOR SENTINAL: Our worthy City Marshal, B. J. Dickerson, was murdered last night about half-past six o'clock, while sitting in the epot, at this place. He was waiting to take the cars to Louisville. The assassin shot through the window, several buckshot entering the temple. He fell immediately, and never spoke afterward but lived about forth minutes. He was a very quiet, highly respected and peacable citizen. No clue has yet been obtained of the murderer.
