3rd GA Cavalry flags captured by 2nd Indiana Cav.

Hello,

On Sept. 29, 1862 near Elizabethown, KY, the 2nd Indiana Cavalry surprised the 3rd Georgia Cavalry in their camps and overran them, capturing their First National battle flag.

Some of the 3rd Georgia got away and reformed the regiment for the Stones River battle later in the year but they were not up to full strength. Between the KY capture and the Stones River fighting, the 3rd Georgia got a new flag.

Then, in the Stones River era engagements, the 2nd Indiana Cavalry captured this flag from the 3rd Georgia as well.

What I am seeking are accounts, other than in the Official Records, of these flag captures from men of the 2nd Indiana Cavalry.

Is there a regimental history? Do diaries exist? Letters of men from the 2nd Indiana Cavalry or their letters to period newspapers of these captures? The time frame is Sept. 1862 and late December/early Janaury, 1863.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Greg Biggs
