Re: 71st Reg't Vol./6th Indiana CAv.

Although the Muster Roll Cards for Indiana show James H. McChord as enlisting in Company A, 71st Indiana Infantry, he wound up in Company M...and the 71st was changing into the 6th Indiana Cavalry. He was 26 years old. According to the Adjutant Generals Report, James enlisted on 10 November, 1863, and died at Florence, SC, on 3 October, 1864. The Returns for Company M list James as Missing In Action during Stoneman's Raid on Macon, GA. General Stoneman surrendered his forces, but most fled rather than surrendering, and a large number of those men were captured. They were sent to Andersonville, GA, and in early September they were moved to Charleston, SC pending the completion of Florence. Due to a yellow fever epidemic in Charleston, the prisoners were moved to Florence anyway, and they occupied the prison the first Sunday in October. It is most likely that James died of disease. The Prison was only open from Oct '64 thru Feb '65. Over 2000 prisoners died in those 4 months. A large number of them were paroled in Dec '64.
