The Indiana in the Civil War Message Board

1st Indiana Cavalry

Greetings:

"The Bracken Rangers" is a new book that chronicles the Civil War from the perspective of the 250 men of the 1st Indiana Cavalry, Companies I and K. First person and contemporary accounts detail the 3 year service of these Hoosiers from 1861 to 1864. As scouts and headquarters' escort to a series of Union generals in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, they experienced many pivotal events firsthand. Cheat Mountain, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Petersburg - the men of the 1st Indiana Cavalry were there.

The book includes short biographies of most of the men of Companies I and K, personal letters, newspaper accounts, official military reports, and period discourse. There are essays on related topics and material regarding post-bellum life of the veterans.

The project was completed with generous contributions from several descendents of the troopers.
