After some research, my best guess is that he married Lucy/Sarah Holyoke of Galesburg in 1852, and died in Kansas City. There's an "F. M. Smith" buried in Hope Cemetery, Galesburg (the same cemetery the Holyokes are buried in), but with no dates on the stone.
