Rebel Riverboat Captain So. Il?

When I lived in Murphysboro, Il, my next door neighbor, an elderly gentleman, told me of a supposed Southern Sympathizer Riverboat Captain that lived in Jackson, County, close to the mouth of the Big Muddy River, as it flows into the Mississippi. He said that he and his family soon left the region shortly after Civil War began for the south. I searched Jackson County census from that period but could not determine occupations, least not one of riverboat captain. It has always intrigued me, and I wondered if anyone on the board had a guess as to what his name might have been?
