Does anyone have any information/references regarding Illinois men who signed up to serve in the Civil War, but were still in the West? Many men were still seeking their fortunes in California and other Western states during the Civil War-but signed up to serve. Not much action between the two sides (I think one in Texas maybe)--but lots of skirmishes with Native Americans and guarding forts in Arizona, New Mexico and so forth.
