Frank,

As a little followup on the description of his departure from the unit, in 1922 his widow applied for a pension. There is no "Certificate No." shown on the index card, which "usually" indicates rejection. Of course, if he was officially considered a deserter or could not prove otherwise, his application would be rejected.

Maybe is you got a copy of the widow's application, it might reveal more.
