Lincoln & Grant: A Partnership Forged in War

The Union League Club of Chicago presents
Lincoln & Grant: A Partnership Forged in War
Wednesday, October 14, 2009
Reception: 11:30 a.m.; Luncheon and Program: 12 p.m.

The Union League Club of Chicago invites you to attend a special luncheon presentation marking the conclusion of its year-long observance of the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. Please join us when world-renowned Lincoln scholar and Illinois State Historian Dr. Thomas Schwartz presents “Lincoln & Grant: A Partnership Forged in War.”

Dr. Schwartz will share the fascinating story of these two sons of Illinois, comparing their backgrounds, personalities, and examining the growth of their relationship from their first correspondence, through their first face-to-face meeting, to their final parting. He also explores the rich and profound trust that ended the war, saved the federal Union, and forever bound both men together. Learn also how if, as originally planned, General Grant had been in attendance at Ford’s Theater on April 13, 1865, Booth’s diabolical plan would have been thwarted and the course of American history changed forever.

Thomas Schwartz’s visit and presentation coincide with the exhibit of seven kiosks of Lincoln artifacts in the club’s lobby, on loan from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum in Springfield, from October 10 - 16.

Don’t miss this exhibit or Thomas Schwartz’s extraordinary presentation. A reception begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by the luncheon and program at 12 p.m.
