Re: 66th ILL Western Sharpshooters

I thought the same thing till a friend told me otherwise. Some checking proved him right.I guess I'm partial and proud but, IL. in general played a major role in every aspect of the war.I enjoyed your qoute. The western men a respected foe. From first to muster to the end of the war. There are few that could deny the valor of the 7IL Inf..My GGuncle 2nd Lt. Charles T.Elliott Co.A shot in the face at Pittsburg Landing Apr.6,1862. The ball went in just below his eye through his mouth and lodged in his neck.Pvt. Walter J.Mallett saved his life by cutting out the bullet with his pocket knife.I believe he inadvertantly preformed a Tracheotomy allowing him to breath. I would think choking on his own blood. He lived and returned to duty the balance of his muster. He died in the Soldiers Home at Danville, Vermillion Co.,IL.
