Is your James H. living in Webster Co., MO in 1870? If so, he is age 48 and was born in Pennsylvania.

The muster and descriptive rolls for the IL regiments you listed have no one fitting this age description and place of birth.

His oldest child (age 7 in July 1870) was born in IL abt 1863, but the father could have enlisted in KY, TN, MO regiments, or perhaps joined the Navy prior to the birth of his son. A lot of possibilities here.

You'll need to check further Census records on the family, perhaps obits that mention his service record, etc. Do you know where he died at? Funeral home records, death records, etc. If he was a Union man, then you may want to check the G.A.R. records at St. Louis for his name. If he belonged to a Union regiment, then he (or his widow and children--depending on how long he lived) likely filed for a pension at some point in time.

When you find out a little more about him and his family, then you could have the people from this board (printed in Red at the top of the page) locate his service and/or pension application. They are usually faster than the National Archives, and can e-mail you if questions arise.

Hope this helps!!
Ann
