Re: Need help reading pension file

Pam,

You can click on the link at the end of this message or on the big ad in the top center of this page.

Once at the Military Records Research Service Page, look for the Union, Pension link on the left-hand side of the page. You can order by credit card or check (mail order).

Pam, you never know what you're going to find in the veteran's pension file. The average Union pensions file is between 60-70 pages, some are over 200 and some are less than 30. Usually the more difficulty the veteran had in proving his service or if he was rejected, the more information will be included in the file. There "may" be family information. Many times veterans were asked to provide wife's and dependent's names and addresses. Recently, we filled an order where a person had ripped a page out of the family bible and included it in the pension application file. Of course, the client was ecstatic with this information. In another, file there was an artifact. The veteran had been wounded during the war and the tip of a bayonet had been removed from his body. That bayonet tip was in the pension file envelope. Amazing, huh?

You must hope for the best and expect the worst when ordering pension files. It may answer all sorts of questions for you and then again...
