MajGen. Charles F. Smith told Grant to offer no terms but unconditional surrender to Buckner at Ft. Donelson, Tenn.
Smith was West Point's commandant of cadets when Sherman and Grant were cadets.
Sherman said that had C. F. Smith lived, neither Grant or Sherman would have been heard of in The Civil War.
Smith died of an infection (tetnaus?) compounded by dysentery on April 25, 1862.
