The infromation came from the Illinois Muster Rolls which are now available on the internet.

You can also get a history of 10th and 60th Ill. Infantry Rgts. on that site.

Both regiments served with Sherman from the Atlanta campaign, March to the Sea (Savannah campaign) and Carolina campaign--the time frame your ancestor most likely served as a scout (or maybe a bummer). A bummer was some one who foraged for food for Sherman's army as it advanced from Atlanta to the sea and then through the Carolinas.

You can order his service record through the box at top center of this web page. That might confirm his duty as a scout.

I searched the pension index but nothing was found. I even tried varied spellings.
