The Illinois in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Other Sides Account of the Same Event

The 27th Illinois did lose a flag. When the 27th Illinois re-enlisted they were not put in the 9th Illinois consolidated regiment yet. At the battle of Franklin, the 27th Ill (Vetern Detachment) was in Conrad's brigade (The 2 brigades of Wagner's division that was posted half a mile in front. I had 3 family members in the 27th Illinois.

The father Amos Murray Prouty joied up early in the war. He fought at Belmont (left a great diary on that battle), Corinth, Iuka, Island #10. Served in company "I" Sergeant he was disabled and discharged Sep 25th, 1862.

His oldest son-William H. Prouty joined the 27th Illinois on August 13th, 1862. He mustered out June 17th, 1865.

Another brother--John Murray Prouty joined the 27th Illinois on Jan 5th, 1864. He was wounded at Resca,Ga by a bullet in he lung in which he carried for the rest of his life. He was transferred to the 9th Illinois consolidated regiment (company E).

William H. Prouty was captured at Franklin, he spent 4 months at Andersonville and was released.

As far as the "2nd flag mentioned captured" other then the 27th Illinois. I believe that was the 52nd Ohio's flag. From the book "Decision in the West" Atlanta Campaign of 1864, by
Albert Castel. On page 314 "Only a handful of McCook's men managed to climb onto the parapet, one being the colorbearer of the 52nd Ohio. He was riddled with bullets after planting the flag.

I have never found anything mentioning the 52nd Ohio losing a flag at this battle. I am curious to what this "other flag" was captured. I do believe it was the 52nd Ohio though.

Well hopefully somebody on here might know more on this.

Have a good weekend,

Shawn
