Re: Illinois Black Laws - slave house near Equalit

Have you ever been to it Kenneth? I went when I was a kid (many years ago) and it gave me the creeps then. Have no desire to go back either.

One of the men who use to work for Crenshaw would kidnap free blacks and sell them into slavery in St. Louis. He was later caught in Massac Co. Well, actually an arrest warrant was issued, but they never found him. The charges were dropped against these men in 1865 when the war offically ended.

I've always thought it really odd that the Sons of Liberty would have their headquarters within rock throwing distance of the slave house too. I've wondered if there wasn't more "tunnels, etc." than people actually knew about, or know about now.

There is still a big argument in Cairo about slaves coming into the state from there. The man who wants the slave house re-opened says there is, while the citizens of Cairo say it's just old drainage pipes going into the river.

We had one of those large drainage systems here too, except one of the tunnels ended in a basement of a house about a block or two from the river.
