Alan,
You're welcome, and I hope you discover the names you're looking for in these cases. I can check our local library, but offhand I don't recall that we have much here on Hancock County. I wish I knew a researcher there who would help you, but unfortunately, I don't.

It was in the Carthage area that the Mormons had previously been expelled from the State. And a couple of counties away, at Alton, IL was where Elijah Lovejoy was murdered for printing his views against slavery in his religious newspaper. He was against slavery, but not an abolitionist like his brother, Owen. When he was murdered, the newspapers who supported his cause were "The Emancipator" (of MA or NY) and oddly enough--Southern newspapers--not because of his beliefs, but because of his right to express them. A group of people shot him, but no one was ever convicted. The two leaders of the group were friends of Abraham Lincoln.

Should you have any difficulty finding/ordering the records you need, then I'll see if I can order them for you should you wish. With the correct year, they should be able to find the names for you and thus the court files.
Good Luck,
Ann
