Re: 90th Illinois Volunteer (Irish)

Steve,
Some more info on the 90th flag. According to our friend Pat Swan of Nashville, Tn., the present flag of the 90th that is in Springfield in the possesion of the Illinois National Guard is not the flag that the regiment carried in the field. The first flag was somehow lost or destroyed by the elements. The Lt. Col. had a new one made toward the end of the war. I assume that this would be Lt. Col. Stuart (Just my guess). This was the one that came back home with the troops. Some years after the war, the regiment borrowed that flag from the state for a special regimental event in Chicago and before they returned it, it was destroyed in the Great Chicago fire of 1871. They then had one made to replace that one and that is the one we see in Springfield now.
Thanks Pat for that bit of history.
Frank
