It seems that there is a lot to learn about this outfit.

"There were two regiments numbered 56. The first was organized in Chicago between October 31, 1861 and February 1, 1862 and was called the “Mechanic Fusileers.” Because of turbulence, discord and outright mutiny it was mustered out of service in accordance with orders from the War Department in February 1862. The second regiment given the number 56 is the subject of this report.
