Pryce writes that the regiment (along with the rest of the 1st Division, 13th Corps) was sent to New Orleans from Matagorda Island, TX on April 27. On May 4, a detachment of five companies of the 22nd went up the Red River to Fort DeRussy, where because of Confederate obstructions, the detachment turned back. He describes the conditions of the Red River at the Fort.
