Hello Jody, Macon, Georgia did not surrender its city during the war. While Camp Oglethorpe primarily an officer prison for Union soldiers was in Macon, Georgia in 1864 and of course Camp Sumter known as Andersonville held a lot of Union prisoners they were taken to various prisons east of there when General Sherman began his infamous march in November 1864 from Atlanta. The Confederacy not knowing where Sherman's Army was heading forwarded some prisoners to Camp Millen, Georgia and another prison at Florence, South Carolina. Some were even taken to Salisbury, North Carolina. The sick, too feeble to travel were left in south western Georgia. As you might expect there was not one specific place where all the prisoners were transferred to.
