Your ancestor was part of the Dix-Hill Cartel prisoner exchange. He should have been paroled in September 1862 at or near Vicksburg, Mississippi and formally exchanged in November 1862. The Dix-Hill Cartel agreement of 1862 virtually cleared all prisoners of war in both Northern and Southern prisons.

Josiah R. Lamb enlisted in Company F 27th Regiment, Alabama Infantry on Christmas Eve; December 24, 1861 at New Market, Alabama located in Madison County not too far from Huntsville, Alabama for a period of one year and was elected as 2nd Corporal.

Corporal Josiah R. Lamb left Camp Douglas, Illinois on September 4, 1862 and took the vessell John H. Done to Vicksburg, Mississippi where he arrived on September 20, 1862. According to his Confederate Compiled Military Service Records he went home on leave in August 1863 and never returned for duty and was noted as a deserter.

However, There was also a Josiah Lamb who enlisted in Mead's Cavalry on October 1, 1864 and this Josiah Lamb enlisted in Madison County, Alabama which leads me to believe this was the same soldier. The Fort Donelson National Park Service should have a lot of information about the Confederate soldiers who were at Fort Donelson.

Interestingly Josiah R. Lamb would die 50 years to the day when he was at Fort Donelson, Tennessee. He died on February 13, 1912 in Madison County, Alabama. Fort Donelson would surrender on February 16, 1862. Well you know the rest since you wrote the memorial for Find A Grave.
