Company F

The following is a list of the 38 former Confederate soldiers who were desirous of taking the oath and joining Company F of the 1st Connecticut Cavalry. All enlisted on October 1, 1863 and mustered into their new Union Regiment on October 5, 1863. All were prisoners of war and were incarcerated at the Union prison at Fort Delaware. Company G was also had many former Confederate soldiers but for right now I am only listing Company F. The former Confederates from Company F were transferred to Company G in April of 1864. Some of the former Confederates kept their names in the 1st Ct. while it appears that others changed their names perhaps to avoid detection if captured by their former Army. However there may be a multitude of reasons including spelling etc. In April of 1864 the former Confederate soldiers were transferred to the North West to avoid being captured by their former Confederates. Some transferred to the 1st United States Independent Company after arriving in the North West. The 1st United States Independent Company should not be confused with the 1st United States Infantry. Also this may not be the complete list of Confederates but just those former Confederates that I could find. (The North West meaning Fort Snelling, Minnesota) 20 former Confederates of Company F 1st Connecticut Cavalry would desert prior to April of 1864 more than 50%. Only 9 would live to finish their enlistment and be discharged on November 16, 1865. Those finishing their enlistments were eligible for a United States pension. The list will be alphabetical.

1) Elisha W. Bond - aka Elisha Bond. Believed to be former Confederate with Company I 50th Regiment, Virginia Infantry. Born in Virginia. Prisoner of War during Gettysburg campaign. Ewell's Corps, Johnson's Division, Jones' Brigade. Deserted January 29, 1864
2) Joseph Brinine - Became a POW on July 3, 1864 paroled on February 14, 1865 died on July 20, 1865
3) Jacob Callicut - Transferrd to the NW: Discharged on November 16, 1865
4) Charles D. Cannon - Believed to be former Confederate with Company C 14th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. Enlisted in 1861 at age 20 and from Tennessee. 6'1" with sandy hair, blue eyes, light complexion. Captured at battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia and parloed and exchanged. Captured again during Gettysburg campaign. Hill's Corps, Heth's Division, Archer's Brigade. Deserted on January 27, 1864

7) James C. Clyatt aka J.C. Clyatt - Believed to be former Confederate with Company F 14th Regiment, Alabama Infantry. Listed as prisoner of war during Gettysburg campaign. Born in Georgia. Hill's Corps, Anderson's Division, Archer's Brigade. Transferred to NW: Discharged on June 15, 1865

9) David Debery aka David S. Deberry - Believed to be former Confederate with Company F 7th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. Enlisted at age 17 in 1861 and born in Rowan County, North Carolina. Listed as 5'5" in height. Listed as prisoner of war during Gettysburg campaign. Hill's Corps, Pender's Division, Lane's Brigade. Transferred to NW: Deserted on July 17, 1865
10) Leander Doty aka Lee D. Dota - Believed to be former Confederate with Company G 14th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. Listed as being a prisoner of war during Gettysburg campaign. Hill's Corps, Anderson's Division, Archer's Brigade. Deserted on January 27, 1864
11) James R. Hallsell aka James R. Halsell - Believed to be former Confederate with New Company D 13th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry. Enlisted in Confederate Army in May of 1861 and was 19 years old and was born in Alabama. Listed as being wounded and missing from hospital at Gettysburg campaign. Longstreet's Corps, McLaws' Division, Barksdale's Brigade. Deserted on January 10, 1864

13) William Hart - Believed to be former Confederate with Company D 2nd Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. Listed as being born in Germany. Listed as prisoner of war near or during Gettysburg campaign. Ewell's Corps, Rhodes' Division, Ramseur's Brigade. Listed as being transferred to both 1st Connecticut Cavalry and 3rd Maryland Cavalry. Discharged on June 20, 1865
14) George E. Hayes aka George E. Hays - Believed to be former Confederate with Company D 2nd Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. Reported as being born in Missouri. Listed as prisoner of war during Gettysburg campaign. Ewell's Corps, Rhodes' Division, Ramseur's Brigade. Deserted on January 25, 1864
15) Henry Jackson - Believed to be former Confederate with Company C 8th Regiment, Alabama Infantry. Listed as being born in Illinois. Prisoner of war during Gettysburg campaign. Hill's Corps, Anderson's Division, Wilcox's Brigade. Deserted on January 29, 1864
16) Henry C. Kendall aka Henry M. Kendall - Believed to be former Confederate with Company F 8th Regiment, Virginia Infantry. Longstreet's Corps, Pickett's Division, Garnett's Brigade. Originally taken to Fort McHenry by his own account. He was transferred to Fort Delaware on July 6, 1863. The following is from an Ohio newspaper dated in June of 1913 and were the words of Henry C. Kendall.

FELL ASLEEP ON MARCH

""We were taken to Balitmore and from there to Fort Henry. Pickett's
Division had been in forced march without sleep for so long before the
charge that we were completely exhausted but we did not realize this in
the wild excitement of the fight but after it was over we were so near
dead from fatigue we dropped asleep on the march to Balitmore and had to
be prodded by the Union men every little while.""
""When near Fort Henry at 3 o'clock in the morning we were permitted
to pause. I sank into a hole all but dead for sleep and awoke with water
all around me, my face just out for my head was on a slightly raised
place. The hole where I had fallen asleep had filled with water from a
three hour rain that had beaten and flown in my face without waking me.
From that point we went on to the fort and that was the end of the war for
us.""

According to further reaserach on Henry C. Kendall he deserted near Harpers Ferry, which is where he grew up. He took his horse and side arms and equipment and fled to the hills of Coshocton County, Ohio where he stayed in hiding with his brother who was also a Confederate deserter of the 8th Regiment, Virginia Infantry. Henry C. Kendall had mentioned that other former Confederates belonging to the 1st Connecticut had also sought refuge in Coshocton County but did not mention names or how many. Henry C. Kendall would stay in Coshocton County unitl the War ended and married a women from Zanesville, Ohio and then moved to Columbus, Ohio. Henry C. Kendall died in Columbus, Ohio and is buried at the Green Lawn Cemetery, with no mention of military service. He had changed his middle initial from C to M perhaps from being detected. He died on June 3, 1919.

18) Morris Nelson - Believed to be former Confederate with Company B 52nd Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. Listed as being born in Montgomery County, North Carolina. He enlisted in Confederate Army in April of 1862 in Randolph County, North Carolina at age 20 and was listed as being 5'10" in height. Became a prisoner of war during Gettysburg campaign. Hill's Corps, Heth's Division, Pettigrew's Brigade. Transferrd to NW: Discharged on November 16, 1865

21) Miles H. Partin - Believed to be former Confederate with Company H 21st Regiment, Arkansas Infantry. Listed as being born in Mississippi. Listed as being a prisoner of war during the battle of Big Black, Mississippi. Part of the Vicksburg campaign. The normal prison route to Fort Delaware from his capture site would have been to Memphis, Tennessee, then to Louisville, Kentucky, then to Camp Chase, Ohio and then to Fort Delaware. Transferred to NW: Discharged on November 16, 1865
22) Benjamin F. Phillips aka Benjamin J. Phillips - Believed to be former Confederate with Company B 26th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. Joined Confederate Unit in June of 1861. Listed as taken as prisoner of war at Gettysburg campaign. Hill's Corps, Heth's Division, Pettigrew's Brigade. Deserted on December 8, 1863
23) William R. Phillips - Believed to be former Confederate with Company G 9th Regiment, Virginia Infantry. Listed as prisoner of war during Gettysburg campaign. Longstreet's Corps, Pickett's Division, Armistead's Brigade. Deserted on January 29, 1864
24) William H. Pickett - Believed to be former Confederate with Company F 3rd Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. (Note: there were two William H. Pickett's in the 3rd Regiment, North Carolina Infantry and both were taken as prisoners in the Gettysburg campaign however this is the correct William H. Pickett that joined the 1st Connecticut Cavalry) Joined Confederate unit in June of 1861 at age 21. Listed as a prisoner of war during the Gettysburg campaign. 25) William Pierce aka William Pearce - Believed to be former Confederate with Company B 52nd Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. Joined Confederate unit in October 1862 at age 27. Listed as being wounded and as a prisoner of war during Gettysburg campaign. Hill's Corps, Heth's Division, Pettigrew's Brigade. Transferred to NW: Discharged due to Disability on July 21, 1865
26) William B. Richards - Believed to be former Confederate with Company G 5th Regiment, Florida Infantry. Enlisted in Confederate unit in March 1862 at age 18 and being born in Florida. Listed as wounded and as a prisoner of war during Gettysburg campaign. Hill's Corps, Anderson's Division, Perry's Brigade. Deserted on January 29, 1864
27) George B. Riggins - Believed to be former Confederate with Company L 14th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. Enlisted in May 1861 in Confederate unit at age 24. Listed as being a prisoner of war at Gettysburg campaign. Hill's Corps, Heth's Division, Archer's Brigade. Deserted on October 8, 1863 (just three days after being mustered in)
28) William Rodman - Believed to be former Confederate with Company H 33rd Regiment, Mississippi Infantry. Enlisted in Confederate unit in March of 1862 at age 19. Listed as a prisoner of war during the battle of Bakers Creek aka Champion Hill, Mississippi on May 16, 1863. Most likely route to Fort Delaware would have been from Mississippi to Memphis, Tennessee and then to Louisville, Kentucky then to Camp Morton, then to Fort Delaware for this time period. Transferred to NW: Discharged on November 16, 1865
29) Alfred Sawyer aka Alfred Sawyers - Believed to be former Confederate with Orange (Virginia) Artillery: Captain Charles W. Fry. Listed as straggling in Maryland during Confederates retreat from the Gettysburg campaign and listed as a prisoner of war. Ewell's Corps, Rhodes' Division, Carter's Artillery Battalion. Enlisted in Confederate unit in June of 1861 at age 21 at Wilmington, North Carolina. Soldier made marks with X an indication he may not have been able to read or write. Reported as being wounded and left at hospital at Gettysburg. Listed as prisoner of war during Gettyburg campaign. Ewell's Corps, Johnson's Division, Steuart's Brigade. Transferred to NW: Discharged on July 8, 1865

Company G

The following is a list of the 82 former Confederate soldiers who were desirous of taking the oath and joining Company G of the 1st Connecticut Cavalry. All enlisted on October 1, 1863 and mustered into their new Union Regiment on October 5, 1863. All were prisoners of war and were incarcerated at the Union prison at Fort Delaware. Most of the former Confederates in Company F 1st Connecticut Cavalry were put into Company G later on. Some of the former Confederates kept their names in the 1st Ct. while it appears that others changed their names perhaps to avoid detection if captured by their former Army. However there may be a multitude of reasons including spelling etc. In April of 1864 the former Confederate soldiers were transferred to the North West to avoid being captured by their former Confederates. Some transferred to the 1st United States Independent Company after arriving in the North West. The 1st United States Independent Company should not be confused with the 1st United States Infantry. Also this may not be the complete list of Confederates but just those former Confederates that I could find. (The North West meaning Fort Snelling, Minnesota) Many former Confederates would live to finish their enlistment and be discharged on November 16, 1865. Those finishing their enlistments or discharge were eligible for a United States pension. In Company G, 27 former Confederates out of the 82 would desert prior to April of 1864, a much lower percentage than Company F. Also 31 of the 82 would finish their full enlistments and much higher rate than Company F. All told I have listed a total of 120 former Confederates within the ranks of the 1st Connecticut Cavalry in companies F and G. There were also other Northern units that recruited former Confederates from Fort Delaware. The list will be alphabetical.

18) John Egan aka John Eagan and John Eagen and John Agan - Believed to be former Confederate with Company D 8th Regiment, Louisiana Infantry. Listed as being born in Ireland and enlisted in June of 1861 at age 24. His CMSR's are found under the spelling of John Agan. Because the soldier made his mark with an X it is plausible he could not read nor write which may explain the different spellings of his name. If he could not spell then he probably could not pronouce his name and the job of listing his name fell upon the soldier trying to spell it. He was listed as a prisoner twice once on May 3, 1863 near Fredericksburg, Virginia and again during the Gettysburg campaign. He was noted being transferred to the 1st Connecticut Infantry. 19) James Estus aka James E. Estes - Believed to have been a Confederate in Company G 56th Regiment, Virginia Infantry. Listed as joining Confederate unit in 1861. Shown as being from Dinwiddie County, Virginia. Captured at Pickett's Charge, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Longstreet's Corps, Pickett's Division, Garnett's Brigade. Transferred to NW: Discharged on November 16, 1865
20) Jacob Fields - Believed to have been Confederate with Company D 1st Regiment, South Carolina Infantry (Butler's) (1st Regulars) Listed as being 21 years of age on enlistment in 1861 and as being born in Tennessee. Under orders to protect a Confederate Steamer in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina on March 21, 1863 he was captured by a Northern vessel. Deserted on February 1, 1864

Compiled Military Service Records indicate that he was transferred from 26th Regiment, North Carolina to Company K 53rd Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. Captured at Gettysburg campaign. Ewell's Corps, Rhodes' Division, Daniel's Brigade. Died on April 7, 1864
27) William P. Guynes - Believed to be a Confederate member of Company D 12th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry. Captured in the Gettysburg campaign. Hill's Corps, Anderson's Division, Posey's Brigade. Transferred to NW: Discharged on November 16, 1865. Highest ranking former Confederate in the 1st Connecticut Cavalry made the rank of Captain prior to his discharge.

33) Jefferson Hoover - Believed to have been a Confederate with Company F 23rd Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. Listed as being born in North Carolina and enlisting in Confederate unit in 1861 at age 20. Captured during Gettysburg campaign. Ewell's Corps, Rhodes' Division, Iverson's Brigade. He was sentenced to the Federal prison at Dry Tortugas, Florida on March 25, 1864. Released due to insanity on February 25, 1865
34) Richard Johnson aka Richard H. Johnson and Richard Johnston - Believed to be former Confederate with Company I 4th Regiment, Virginia Infantry. Reported as being a substitute for G.W. Shields on January 21, 1863. Listed as being born in Ireland. Reported as being a prisoner during Gettysburg campaign. Ewell's Corps, Johnson's Division, Stonewall Brigade. This soldier is somewhat peculiar as on page 15 of his CMSR's it says he joined the 1st Connecticut Cavalry. Then on page 17 it says he was transferred to the 1st Connecticut Cavalry. Then on page 18 it says he was transferred from Fort Delaware to Point Lookout on September 26, 1863. Then on pages 19 and 20 it has him being exchanged on February 3, 1865 at Point Lookout. I was able to follow it until pages 19 and 20. It does not appear that any other CMSR's had been mixed in with his. There were no other R. Johnson's or R. Johnston's in the 4th Regiment, Virginia Infantry. Died on February 6, 1864
35) Ambrose A. Jones aka Ambrose Jones - Believed to have been a Confederate with Company D 53rd Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. Listed as being born in Georgia, enlisted in 1862 age 16. Captured or deserted during Gettysburg campaign. Ewell's Corps, Rhodes' Division, Daniel's Brigade. Transferred to NW: Discharged on November 16, 1865

There is a number 51 above the 57th Georgia indicating that this unit may have been the 51st Georgia and they were at Gettysburg suffering 25% casualties. However, there is not a Terry listed in the 51st Georgia. It is plausible that General Schoepf at the time and later General Ainsworth while making the CMSR's copied General Schoepf's mistake. If Terry was captured at the Gettysburg campaign then he may have been with the 51st Georgia although they do not carry him on their rosters. If Terry was captured as an example at Big Black, Mississippi then his capture site was incorrect and he was with the 57th Georgia. Deserted on February 13, 1864
