Re: Camp Chase
In Response To: Camp Chase ()

Hello again Dick, next time just email LOL
I believe you are referring to the flag pole that we see sometimes on a postcard of the Camp Chase Cemetery. It appears to be Naval in some respects. The Ohio Historical Society has copies of the post card and on one of them is a date the post card was mailed. I have wondered if the flag pole somehow was in tribute to Knauss who as you know passed away in 1917. It would appear that the pavilion was built the year after his death in 1918. If I were in Columbus, Ohio now I would start by confirming the date of the postcard and looking at early photographs of Camp Chase that can be dated using the Confederate Veteran Magazines etc., and then working my way backwards. For example if you see the flagpole in 1917 but not in 1912 then I would be looking for articles in the Ohio State Journal for example around Flag Day June 14. I have covered the Camp Chase Memorials since their start up until the 1940's have not saw anything that refers to the flagpole. Neither did I see anything at the National Archives however they have so much material and I was not looking for the flagpole per say. Another reason why I speculate that it might have been in honor of Knauss is because of his known patriotic nature. As you know he loved the American Flag and gave away small flags to school children etc. However correct history should not be ruled just on speculation as any ones opinion is just as good as the next persons. But I do believe your answer could be found in Columbus, Ohio. For those who do not know Dick Hoffman he is widely recognized for his work at the Camp Chase Cemetery. Camp Chase and Dick Hoffman are synonymous. Once a year Dick and members of the Hilltop Historical Society pays tribute to the Confederate dead at Camp Chase. There are many historians associated with Camp Chase such as Monty Chase, Paul Clay, Lois Neff, Dick Hoffman, Paul LaRue, David Roth, M. Perkins, etc. I probably should not have listed the names as now I'm going to accidentally leave some people out. The above people have been actively engaged with Camp Chase history for decades and some a little longer. Each one has donated a unique knowledge of Camp Chase in one form or another.
