Confederate Dead in Ohio due to Shiloh

The following subject matter was obtained from the CMSR's of the following soldiers. (Compiled Military Service Records) The CMSR's are only about 90% accurate for various reasons.

I am reminded of Corporal Noah Van Martin Ness who enlisted in the 7th Kansas Cavarly. He was killed in Mississippi in 1864 and the State of Kansas named a county and a city in his honor after the War. Not until a few years ago did genealogists understand that his correct spelling was Kness, not Ness. This is a prime example of going by the CMSR's insofar as going by the spelling of the last names.

Starting with Baldwin in row 41 (grave # 2122) and continuing through rows 42 and 43 and ending with grave # 2152 are the 31 Confederates who all died of wounds resulting in the battle of Shiloh April 6,7, 1862. They were taken to Camp Dennison, near Cincinnati, Ohio and died at the Dennison hosptial. All were buried at the Waldschmidt Cemetery near Camp Dennison where Union and Confederate soldiers were buried. Much like the Southeast Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio. In May of 1869 Captain Irving reinterred the 31 Confederates to the Camp Chase Cemetery. However, not all of the dead Confederates were removed to Camp Chase. At least eight (8) were left behind for unknown reasons. There should have been 39 reinterred to Camp Chase. In July of 1869 the remaining eight were reinterred to the Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio. These eight Confederates also died at Camp Dennison resulting in wounds received at Shiloh and died about the same time as the 31 Confederates taken to Chase. The following are the names of the eight Confederates left behind at Camp Dennison.

Private John H. Moore Company E 4th Kentucky Mounted Infantry wounded at Shiloh taken to Camp Dennison and died there but left behind and not taken to Camp Chase in 1869. Rather taken to the Spring Grove Cemetery at Cincinnati, Ohio.

Private Thomas J. Witherspoon Company F 12th Tennessee Infantry wounded at Shiloh and taken to Camp Dennison and died there but left behind and not taken to Camp Chase in 1869. Rather taken to the Spring Grove Cemetery at Cincinnati, Ohio

Sergeant Sanders Taylor Company I 44th Tennessee Infantry wounded at Shiloh and taken to Camp Dennison and died there but left behind and not taken to Camp Chase in 1869. Rather taken to the Spring Grove Cemetery at Cincinnati, Ohio

Private John B. Mason Company B 6th Tennessee Infantry wounded at Shiloh and taken to Camp Dennison and died there but left behind and not taken to Camp Chase in 1869. Rather taken to the Spring Grove Cemetery at Cincinnati, Ohio

Private Lee Carmichael Company I 3rd Kentucky Mounted Infantry wounded at Shiloh and taken to Camp Dennison and died there but left behind and not taken to Camp Chase in 1869. Rather taken to the Spring Grove Cemetery at Cincinnati, Ohio

Private Joseph Bolton Company G 5th Kentucky Infantry wounded at Shiloh and listed as missing. Not shown as being taken to Dennison but died there. Not taken to Camp Chase in 1869 rather taken to Spring Grove Cemetery at Cincinnati, Ohio

Private Stephen P. Berry Company E (Gage's Battery) 2nd Battalion Alabama Light Artillery. Wounded and reported taken prisoner by Union troops. Not listed as being taken to Camp Dennison but died there. Not taken to Camp Chase in 1869 rather taken to Spring Grove Cemetery at Cincinnati, Ohio

Private Thomas B. Latta Company A 7th Kentucky Mounted Infantry wounded and taken to Camp Dennison. Not taken to Camp Chase but rather to the Spring Grove Cemetery at Cincinnati, Ohio

All of the wounded Confederates at Shiloh who were taken to Camp Dennison were done so by the United States Sanitary Commisson (USSC) by steam ship. All would arrive either on April 18th or 20th 1862. The USSC leased steam ships to bring back Union and Confederate wounded from Shiloh. The two primary steam ships used were the USS Monarch and the USS Tycoon. The USSC hired doctors and nurses to attend to the wounded on ship.

Because of the burials of both Union and Confederate at the Waldschmidt Cemetery the soldier named Baldwin may be a Union soldier but it is not likely. There was only one (1) Confederate named Baldwin who was listed as being killed at Shiloh. There was also one (1) Union soldier named Baldwin killed at Shiloh but his body now rests in Illinois. All indications point to Baldwin as being Eli C. Baldwin from Alabama.

Likewise the soldier named Copland/Copeland in grave # 2148 may or may not be his correct name. I do not believe his last name is correct on his CMSR's as it's spelled Cople.

Likewise the soldier in grave # 2135 his last name may be spelled various ways, ie Cohoon/Cohoun

You will also note the grave ???? of Edward Johnson of Company H 21st Alabama Infantry. He does not have a grave either at Waldschmidt or Spring Grove Cemetery or at Camp Chase. There were two (2) Confederate Edward Johnson's listed as being killed at Shiloh. I do not think he was reinterred from Camp Dennison to Chase however his grave remains a mystery for now.

The dead from Camp Dennison were perhaps the hardest of all of the graves at the CCCC insofar as incorrect information. I feel that many mistakes have been corrected but they are not all corrected as of yet for the above reasons.

GRAVE 2122 AT CAMP CHASE READS- BALDWIN CSA
Grave 2122 could be Private Eli C. Baldwin of Company D 22nd Alabama Infantry. His Compiled Military Service Records say he was killed at the battle of Shiloh. I have gone through every Baldwin who participated at the battle of Shiloh. Only one Confederate Baldwin was killed and or wounded at Shiloh. A couple of the men who died at Dennison were listed as being killed at Shiloh and then turned up at the hospital at Camp Dennison, only to die days later. Private Eli C. Baldwin does not show up at Dennison. Eli C. Baldwin could have arrived at Dennison already dead. Until further research can be done at the National Archives, my money is on this soldier for now.

This unit was at Shiloh and he is listed as being killed at the battle.

I do not think this is how he spelled his name. However it is not Copland or Copeland either. The jury is still out until further evidence can be found. They were both taken to the Camp Chase hospital on April 28, 1862 perhaps because Camp Dennison was at capacity? Both would die on May 22, 1862 due to wounds received at Shiloh.

Total Confederates that have tombstones in Ohio as a result of Shiloh is 41. 33 buried at the Camp Chase Cemetery and 8 at the Spring Grove Cemetery near Cincinnati.
