The odd grave of 2142 at Camp Chase

Sometimes things just don't add up. This is a good example of such a soldier. According to the 1907 Register and thus the tombstone # 2141 at Camp Chase states that the soldier is 1st Lt. J.R. Turney of Company K 2nd Mississippi Regiment. Many times the Lieutenants turn out to be privates from my prior experience in working with these soldiers. And many times their names are mispelled by a letter or two or more and their units may be incorrect.

According to the CMSR's of Private J.R. Turner of Company K 2nd Mississippi Regiment he was indeed shot and captured at Shiloh and taken to Camp Dennison, where he died on May 12, 1862 from wounds. Everything would seem to fall into place except that Company K 2nd MS Regiment was in Northern Virginia during the battle of Shiloh, specifically at Fort Fisher in Virginia near Manassas on April 1, 1862.

Private J.R. Turner was from Iuka, Mississippi and the only possible explaination I can think of was that he may have been given furlough for enlisting for three years at the end of March or begining of April of 1862 and found himself near a major battle and joined in? He may have been welcomed since he was a veteran of 1st Manasass and had prior battlefield experience. Then again I may be way off base.

In the case of grave 2131 at Camp Chase the stones reads C.E. James Company C Texas Rangers CSA

Grave 2131 should be Private Charles E. Jones of Company C 2nd Texas Infantry. He was shot in the lungs on April 7, 1862 and left on the battlefield. He was taken to Camp Dennison and died on May 9, 1862.
