Confederate dead at Dennison revised

There would appear to be 31 Confederate dead who were reinterred from Camp Dennison, Ohio (near Cincinnati) and moved to the Camp Chase Cemetery in May of 1869 by Captain Irving of the Quarter-Masters Department. It was their intent to move all of the Confederate dead in Ohio to two locations. 1) Camp Chase 2) Johnson's Island
The names and units of the Confederate dead at Camp Dennison are at times in error in respect to their tombstones at the Camp Chase Cemetery. They today can be located in rows 41,42 and 43 which are located in the extreme eastern end of the CCCC. (Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery) Many of the errors seem to be of their rank. Somehow some were promoted from Privates to Lieutenants after their deaths. There are also some Alabama soldiers who were reported as Louisiana soldiers on their tombstones. The following is a listing of 23 of the 31 soldiers. All of these 23 soldiers would be wounded at Shiloh either on April 6th or 7th of 1862. The majority of these soldiers would be admitted to the Camp Dennison Hospital on April 18, 1862. Many would not live for more than two weeks. Some of them according to their CMSR's (Compiled Military Service Records) were simply left on the field at (Some of them for dead) Shiloh. The list does not mean that all Confederate wounded at Shiloh were taken to the Camp Dennison Hospital because they were not. The United States had never witnessed such a bloody conflict until the battle of Shiloh and some places were made or expanded to house the wounded Confederates such as turning some of the barracks into hospitals like Camp Dennison.

Also note that it would appear that two seperate soldiers named Edward Johnson would die at Camp Dennison. They were from different Confederate units and had different wounds although they would die on the same day. That is the reason why I put ???? marks next to one of their names.

As the reader looks through these names and units please notice the 21st Alabama Infantry as they suffered greatly at Shiloh as did many Confederate units. At Shiloh, a Sergeant named George E. Dixon would be wounded in the thigh by a minie ball. A twenty dollar gold piece had stopped the bullet for the most part. The gold piece would be found inside of the submarine the H.L. Hunley which he commanded. The Hunley went down on February 17, 1864 and was found a few years ago.
