The Civil War Prisons Message Board

Re: Camp Randall prisoner list.

I have been dormant on this subject for some time. Recalling from my past research bits and pieces of information on Camp Randall prisoners. Perhaps 10 years back more or less I contacted the Archives in Washington-a lady, not just a worker, informed me that they had millions of pieces of information on Confederates that had never been touched, she didn't know where the list was, and didn't have folks to investigate further. I recall the old cliché "man on the moon in 69) but no help from the bureaucrats. The list was left out of the "Official Records" as it is mentioned, although left out for "space considerations". I see the number 1300 prisoners, I was thinking perhaps near 1500. A Confederate surgeon's name is listed-there is a disgusting twist to the surgeon story- as I recall the Yanks sent some up from Camp Douglas to help with the sick, but for selfish reasons, they didn't want to or didn't and were returned to Camp Douglas. Among the graves, is additionally one woman, she, who cared for "her boys" for many years. There were at least two men that escaped and "worked" their way back south (an interesting story there if it could be further uncovered). In some histories of Island Number 10 prisoners, there is great confusion between the 1st Alabama, and the 1st Alabama, Tennessee, & Mississippi regiment (one person told me no regiment existed with names of three states). About the time of the New Madrid caper when these men were surrendered, the latter regiment was absorbed or formed into the 4th Confederate on paper. However they will be forever known as the 1st Ala.Tenn.&Miss Regiment. As I recall there was also perhaps a woman and some blacks that were captured at New Madrid. The prisoners all/or many seem to have passed through Camp Douglas going and returning. Private Wicks 19th Wisconsin who shot Private Spears received payback late in the war, as he was killed/or died a POW in Virginia. My Great Grandfather Isham Crews (1Ala.Tenn.Miss) is among the soldiers buried at Camp Randall. Family history has it that his two brothers were also incarcerated-I can only find one brother as being a POW at Madison. So my great interest is to see a complete list of prisoners to verify yay or nay on all three being at Camp Randall. The verified brother is buried in lower West Alabama many years later.
