His regiment suffered some 170+ men captured at the Wilderness on May 5, 1864. The Civil War Research Database list a number of men of the regiment who died at Andersonville during the same time period of his death. Why his name is missing is a mystery.

His widow Maryette Penner, married October 10, 1844, five children, listed his death at Andersonville as September 12, 1864 of Diarrhea & Scurvy/privations as a prisoner of war

A manuscript volume incorporating the results of investigations in 1864 by Surg. Joseph Jones at Andersonville Military Prison Hospital on gangrene, malarial fevers, diarrhea, and dysentery in the Department of Archives of Louisiana State University.

In the same repository are Surgeon Jones's diary, Sept. 17-22, 1864, containing descriptive matter regarding Andersonville and informtion on autopsies of Federal prisoners.
