Northern Parole Camp locations

Along with the Dix-Hill Cartel of 1862 came parole camps. Of course the larger ones were at Camp Parole near Annapolis,MD and Camp Chase. However, prior to Camp Chase the Parole Camp in Columbus was Camp Lew Wallace. Camp Lew Wallace would shut its doors in January of 1863 and Camp Chase became the full time parole camp. Having said that there were some paroled prisoners also at Camp Chase during Camp Lew Wallace's existence. One major difference between the two was that Camp Lew Wallace did not have a Post Hospital but Camp Chase did. Both Camp Lew Wallace and Camp Chase were located a few miles from Columbus, Ohio.

The following information came from the National Archives in Washington DC. New England troops- Camp Joe Hooker Lakeville, MA / New York and Pennsylvania troops to Elmira, New York/Ohio troops to Camp Lew Wallace, Columbus, Ohio/ Illinois troops to Camp Butler, IL/ Michigan troops to Camp Buckus, MI/ Wisconisin and Minnesota troops to Camp Washburne near Milwaukee/ All other troops in Western states to Camp Benton, MO.
