Company D, 1st Regiment Tennessee Cavalry, formerly Captain W. T. Gass's** Company,* Lt. Col. William Brazelton's Battalion Tennessee Cavalry, mustered into service August 5, 1861 at Knoxville, Tenn.

* This company was successively designated as Captain Gass' Company, Brazelton's Battalion, Tennessee Cavalry, Company C, 3rd Battalion Tennessee Cavlary; Company E, 3rd Battalion Tennessee Cavalry; and Company D, 1st (Carter's) Regiment Tennessee Cavalry.

The 3rd (Brazelton's) Battalion Tennessee Cavalry was organized in 1861 for twelve months and was also called the 2nd and the 5th Battalion Tennessee Cavalry. It was reorganized as the 14th (Carter's) Battalion Tennessee Cavalry. It was increased to a regiment November 14, 1862, by the addition of other companies and became the 1st (Carter's) Regiment Tennessee Cavalry.
