G-g-grandather James Ivan Ross was in the same situation. A private in Company I, 53rd North Carolina Infantry, he was wounded and taken prison at Winchester, VA on 19 September 1864. Sent to a hospital in Baltimore, MD, he was transferred t Point Lookout, MD on 25 October 1864. He was received at Venus Point, Savannah River, Georgia, for exchange on 15 November 1864. He "walked" home from Georgia to Union County, North Carolina where he remained during the duration of the war. His wound, in the elbow, left his arm useless.
