Re: Old Capital Prison
In Response To: Old Capital Prison ()

Hello Jim:

I don't expect that you will find these records in the Compiled Military Service Records because this man was not an enrolled Confederate soldier. He was, according to your posting, a civilian tried by a military commission. Just why he was sent to Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC from St. Louis is a bit of a mystery. Perhaps he was called as a witness in some other commission trial. My understanding has been that Old Capitol Prison was a detention center (you could be held there for months), but not a place for punishment. Many civilians sentenced by a military commission were afterwards sent to, or returned to Fort Delaware to serve out their sentence to hard labor. Neither variation of this surname appears in our database.

My suggestion would be to contact the National Archives and ask about the military commission court records for civilians. Let us know what you find out.
