Re: James Everett, 12th GA Infantry

Sir there is no picture available regarding Captain Everett, however the following text was sent to me by Harris Churchwell author of " Captains at Rest, Biographical Sketches And Grave Sites Of Officers Who Served With The Twelfth Georgia Regiment". Captain Everett, "was wounded in the left side at Gettysburg on July 1, having left the field at 2:30 in the afternoon. He was transported back to Richmond, Chimborazo Hospital #9 and #4. He was captured at Fisher's Hill (Strasburg) October 19, 1864, and spent the remainder of the war at Ft. Delaware, Del. He was released on June 17, 1865."

"James Abbington Everett, Jr. was born 25 August 1840 and died in 1908. He was the son of James Abbington Everett, Sr., an indian trader, who built a trading post on the intersection of two indian trails that would later be included in Houston County, Georgia. The post was in a valley called Fox Valley. As settlers settled around the trading post, the post became part of a small town. When Everett, Sr. applied for a post office, the postal clerk in Washington D.C. mistakenly transcribed the town name as Fort Valley. Therefore, Captain Everett's father founded Fort Valley, Georgia. When James Everett, Sr. died in 1848 he owned 242 slaves and 12,144.5 acres in Houston, Crawford and Coweta Counties. The Captain was an agent for the Georgia Southwestern Railroad just prior to the war at the age of 21. Captain Wm. F. Brown's brother surveyed the railroad right of way through Macon County and founded the town of Montezuma, probably the connection with Captain Brown and Company F. Captain Everett is buried in the Fort Vallley City Cemetery. He was married to Claudia Josephine Rumph, the daughter of the man that developed the Elberta peach. The Captain was 5'-10" in height, Complexion was light, hair was grey (unusual for a 24 year old man), and his eyes were blue."
I hope this is usfull and thank you for answering my query,
