In Response To: James Everett ()

Hello Dave:

The Fort Delaware Society database shows that Captain James EVERETT, Company F, 12th Georgia Infantry was captured at Strasburg, Virginia on 19 OCT 1864 and sent to Harper’s Ferry. He departed Harper’s Ferry on 25 OCT 1864 and arrived at Fort Delaware on 27 OCT 1864. NARA Tape 47 shows that he was admitted to the Fort Delaware prison hospital (no cause stated) on 31 OCT 1864 and was discharged back to the officers’ prison barracks on 2 JAN 1865. He took the Oath of Allegiance under General Orders No. 109 at Fort Delaware on 17 JUN 1865 and was released. Transportation by water and/or rail to Houston County, Georgia was provided under General Orders No. 109.

We know from several prison diaries that no boats left Pea Patch Island on June 17th or 18th because none had returned from making earlier deliveries to Baltimore and Philadelphia. A large group of officers who had taken the Oath were transported to Philadelphia on June 19th and it is reasonable to presume that Captain James EVERETT went with them. From Philadelphia, it is likely that he traveled by rail west and south to reach Georgia. If you have any family narratives that describe his trip home, we would greatly appreciate hearing the details.

Checking his Compiled Military Service Records, I was able to confirm that he enrolled at Drayton, Georgia on 11 JUN 1861 as 1st Lieutenant, Company F, 12th Georgia Infantry to serve for the duration of the war. He was promoted to Captain, Company F on 25 SEP 1862. He was seriously wounded at Gettysburg on 1 JUL 1863, evacuated to a Richmond military hospital suffering a gunshot wound to the left side. He was furloughed home to Fort Valley in Houston County, Georgia. He rejoined the regiment and was present for duty in 1864.

The Fort Delaware Society would like to receive from you some basic biographical information about Captain EVERETT – dates and places of birth, marriage(s), and death, his occupation before and after the war, etc. Additionally, we are collecting photo images of the men who were POWs at Fort Delaware for display on our public Photo Display Board and would love to get a digital image of Captain EVERETT for our display.

I look forward to hearing back from you!
